Matthew Alan, born Matthew Gerbig, is an American actor and producer from Evansville, Indiana. He is known for appearances in television series including 13 Reasons Why, Castle Rock, Snowfall, Lost, Grey’s Anatomy and Presumed Innocent.
Early Life
Alan was raised in Evansville and graduated from F.J. Reitz High School in 1996. While at Reitz, he participated in the school’s speech team.
He continued his education at Western Kentucky University, where he was also a member of the university’s competitive speech and forensics team. He graduated from WKU in 2000 before eventually pursuing acting professionally.
Acting Career
Alan began his acting career under his birth name, Matthew Gerbig, before adopting Matthew Alan professionally.
Over the course of his career, he has accumulated roles in numerous popular television programs. His credits include appearances in Veronica Mars, Lost, The Mentalist, Modern Family, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds and NCIS.
Alan has also held recurring roles in several prominent series. He portrayed Seth Massey in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, Chris Merrill in Hulu’s Castle Rock and appeared as Havemeyer in the FX crime drama Snowfall.
In 2022, Alan portrayed Milwaukee police officer Joseph Gabrish in Netflix’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. He later appeared in the Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent in 2024.
Alan also gained national exposure through commercials. He appeared in a memorable Folgers Christmas commercial and appeared alongside Stevie Wonder in Bud Light’s “The Lucky Chair” commercial, which aired during the 2013 Super Bowl.
Personal Life
Alan is married to actress Camilla Luddington, best known for portraying Dr. Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy and for portraying Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider video game series. The couple married in 2019 and have two children.
