Larry Dean Bucshon (born May 31, 1962) is an American physician and former politician who represented Indiana’s 8th Congressional District, which includes Evansville and much of southwestern Indiana, in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2025. A Republican, Bucshon was also a prominent cardiothoracic surgeon in Evansville before entering politics.

Medical career

Bucshon was born in Illinois and earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed surgical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin and served nearly a decade in the United States Navy Reserve.

Bucshon moved to the Evansville area in 1998 and joined Ohio Valley HeartCare. He later served as president of the practice, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Medical Director of the open-heart recovery intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, now Ascension St. Vincent Evansville.

In 2007, Bucshon was named St. Mary’s Medical Staff Physician of the Year.

U.S. House of Representatives

Bucshon entered politics in 2010, winning the congressional seat previously held by Brad Ellsworth. He took office in January 2011 and represented Indiana’s 8th Congressional District for seven terms.

During his congressional career, Bucshon served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and focused extensively on healthcare and energy policy. He also advocated for transportation projects important to southwestern Indiana, including development of Interstate 69 and the proposed I-69 Ohio River Crossing between Evansville and Henderson, Kentucky.

Bucshon announced in 2024 that he would not seek another term and left Congress on January 3, 2025.

Evansville connection

Before entering Congress, Bucshon spent more than a decade practicing medicine in Evansville. He and his wife, Kathryn, a physician and anesthesiologist, made their home in the Evansville area and raised their four children there.
