Steven Sater

Steven Sater is an American playwright, lyricist, poet, screenwriter and author from Evansville, Indiana, best known for writing the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. His work on the musical earned him two Tony Awards and a Grammy Award and established him as one of the most successful Broadway writers to come from Evansville.

Early Life and Harrison High School

Sater was born and raised in Evansville and attended William Henry Harrison High School, graduating in 1972.

While at Harrison, Sater became involved in school and community theater. It was also during his high school years in Evansville that he first read German playwright Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play Spring Awakening.

The play made a lasting impression on him. Decades later, Sater would return to the story and transform it into one of the most acclaimed Broadway musicals of the 2000s.

After Harrison, Sater attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating summa cum laude. He later studied English literature at Princeton University.

While in college, Sater survived a devastating apartment fire by jumping from a third-story balcony. He suffered severe burns and injuries to his spine and spent months recovering. The experience helped convince him to devote his life to writing and the arts.

Spring Awakening

Sater began collaborating with singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik in 1999. Together they developed a musical adaptation of the play Sater had first encountered as a teenager in Evansville.

Spring Awakening opened on Broadway in 2006 and became a major critical success.

At the 2007 Tony Awards, the production won eight awards, including Best Musical. Sater personally won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and shared the award for Best Original Score with Sheik.

Sater and Sheik also received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album for the original Broadway cast recording.

The musical became an international success, with productions around the world and a major Broadway revival in 2015.

Other Work

Beyond Spring Awakening, Sater has written numerous plays, musicals, songs and screen projects.

His other major theatrical works include Alice by Heart, created with Duncan Sheik and director Jessie Nelson, and Sater later adapted the musical into a novel.

His works also include The Nightingale, Prometheus Bound, New York Animals, Carbondale Dreams and other stage projects.

Sater has collaborated with several prominent musicians and composers during his career, including Duncan Sheik and Burt Bacharach.

Return to Evansville

Sater’s connection to Evansville came full circle in 2010, when a national touring production of Spring Awakening launched in his hometown.

Sater returned to Evansville for the production and reflected on the significance of seeing the musical performed in the city where he had first discovered Wedekind’s original play as a teenager at Harrison.

The homecoming was particularly meaningful because many of the themes that eventually shaped Spring Awakening — adolescence, isolation, identity and the struggle of young people to be understood — were connected in Sater’s mind to his own teenage experiences growing up in Evansville.

Legacy

Steven Sater is one of the most accomplished writers to emerge from Evansville’s performing arts community.

From discovering Spring Awakening as a student at Harrison High School to eventually transforming it into a Tony and Grammy Award-winning international phenomenon, Sater’s Evansville upbringing played an important role in the development of the work that defined his career.

His achievements in theater, literature and songwriting have made him one of Harrison High School’s most distinguished alumni and one of Evansville’s most successful figures in American theater.
