Mike Goebel is an Evansville, Indiana educator and longtime coach at Mater Dei High School, where he became one of the most successful high school wrestling and football coaches in Indiana history.

Goebel graduated from Mater Dei in 1970 and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Indiana in 1974.

Coaching Career

Goebel built a nationally recognized wrestling program at Mater Dei, leading the Wildcats to 12 state championships before stepping down as head wrestling coach in 2007. His teams compiled a 533-14-2 dual-meet record and won 29 consecutive regional championships. He was inducted into the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1987 and received numerous state and national coaching honors.

Goebel also became Mater Dei’s longtime head football coach, leading the Wildcats to the 2000 Indiana state championship along with numerous conference, sectional, regional and semi-state titles.

Political Career

Outside of coaching, Goebel served on the Vanderburgh County Council and was the Democratic candidate for Indiana House District 75 in 2010.
