Calbert Cheaney (born July 17, 1971) is a former professional basketball player and coach from Evansville, Indiana. He is one of the most accomplished basketball players ever produced by the city and remains the all-time leading scorer in both Indiana University and Big Ten men’s basketball history.

Evansville and Harrison High School

Cheaney was born and raised in Evansville and attended William Henry Harrison High School, where he became one of the school’s greatest basketball players. He scored 1,064 career points, led Harrison to two city and two conference championships, and set the school’s single-game scoring record with 47 points. His No. 40 became the first basketball jersey retired by Harrison.

Indiana University and NBA

Cheaney played at Indiana University from 1989 to 1993 under Bob Knight. He finished his career with 2,613 points, becoming the all-time leading scorer in IU and Big Ten history. In 1993, he was named consensus National Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year.

The Washington Bullets selected Cheaney with the sixth overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He played 13 seasons in the NBA, appearing in 825 games for Washington, Boston, Denver, Utah and Golden State.

Following his playing career, Cheaney worked in coaching and player development at the college and professional levels, including Indiana University and the Indiana Pacers.

Cheaney was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016 and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019. He has also remained connected to his hometown, including helping establish the Greater St. James Community Recreation and Education Center in Evansville.
